Laos and Cambodia Cultural Photo Journey (8 Days)
Photography Guide: Diep Van & Kimleng
This Laos and Cambodia photography tour is an 8 day journey that takes you through two of Southeast Asia’s most photogenic countries.
The trip starts in Luang Prabang, a peaceful city known for its Buddhist temples, ancient traditions, and natural scenery.
You will photograph monks at sunrise and visit the turquoise waterfalls set in lush rainforest.
The tour also includes a special visit to meet elephants and their mahouts at the river, providing a unique opportunity for close-up photography.
Midway, you fly to Siem Reap in Cambodia, the gateway to the ancient Angkor temple complex.
Here you explore the world-famous temples, capture their stone carvings and architectural beauty, and learn how to shoot in different light conditions.
The itinerary also includes visits to quieter and less visited ruins, rural villages, and chances to photograph local life and traditions.
The tour ends in Siem Reap with fond farewells and your final photographic moments before departure.
-
Upon arrival in Luang Prabang, our guide will meet you at the airport and transfer you to your hotel for check-in and a short rest.
As the afternoon light softens, we begin our first golden-hour photography session around a cluster of elegant temples and monasteries—icons of Luang Prabang’s spiritual and architectural heritage. The day concludes with a Welcome Dinner at a riverside restaurant overlooking the Mekong River, setting the tone for the journey ahead.
Note: The first-day schedule may be adjusted depending on your arrival time.
-
At dawn, Luang Prabang comes alive with Tak Bat, the daily alms-giving ceremony where saffron-robed monks walk silently through the streets. This centuries-old Buddhist tradition is one of the most profound cultural experiences in Laos, and we take time to respectfully observe and photograph this ritual in the soft morning light.
After breakfast, we travel to the breathtaking Kuang Si Waterfalls, a series of cascading falls and turquoise pools set deep within the rainforest—ideal for slow-shutter photography. Lunch is enjoyed near the falls before returning to Luang Prabang, with a photographic stop at a small Hmong village along the way. The evening is free for rest or independent exploration.
-
This morning offers a truly exclusive experience as we meet mahouts and their rescued Asian elephants during their river-bathing ritual along the Mekong River. This private session is arranged exclusively for this photography tour and is not open to the public.
Under the guidance of our photography leader, you’ll have ample time to photograph, interact with, and feed the elephants. Among them is the rare and gentle White Elephant of Laos, lovingly cared for by the conservation center.
Return to Luang Prabang in the late afternoon, with the remainder of the day free to relax and enjoy the town at your own pace.
-
Begin the day photographing monks crossing the Mekong River in the early morning light as they return to their monasteries. If time allows, enjoy a relaxed river lifestyle photoshoot before returning to the hotel.
Later, transfer to the airport for your flight to Siem Reap, Cambodia, where the legacy of the Khmer Empire awaits. Upon arrival, settle into your hotel and prepare for the Angkor exploration ahead.
-
While many visitors focus solely on Angkor Wat, today we explore lesser-known pre-Angkor temples, architectural predecessors hidden within forests and embraced by massive tree roots—reminiscent of Ta Prohm, yet largely untouched by mass tourism.
These atmospheric ruins provide exceptional photographic opportunities without barriers or crowds. Along the way, we photograph local villagers and monks, then continue to rural delta communities to document authentic daily life. The day concludes with a sunset river cruise, offering tranquil reflections and golden-hour compositions.
-
Today is dedicated to the heart of the Angkor complex: Angkor Wat, one of the greatest architectural achievements in human history. Explore its vast scale, intricate bas-reliefs, and sacred shrines still in use today, while learning about the rise of the Khmer Empire between the 9th and 13th centuries.
Beyond history, this day focuses on crowd-navigation and compositional strategy, teaching you how to photograph effectively in high-traffic locations. We move against the flow where possible, seeking quieter angles and optimal light.
For those wishing to capture the iconic Angkor Wat sunrise, departure is at 4:30 AM to secure prime positions—along with access to a lesser-known sunrise viewpoint shortly after the classic shot.
-
Bid farewell to Angkor’s main temples and return to the road less traveled, exploring secluded forest sanctuaries and rural Khmer villages that reveal daily life beyond the tourist routes.
In the afternoon, we return to the Angkor complex to visit Bayon Temple, famed for its serene stone faces and recognized as the final state temple of the Angkor era. While many focus solely on sunset views, we also seek out a quieter, deeply spiritual moment: a traditional water blessing performed by monks for local residents—a rare cultural encounter and a meaningful photographic experience.
-
After breakfast, you will be transferred to the airport according to your departure schedule.
You may leave feeling tired, fulfilled, and creatively inspired—perhaps even missing the early mornings and the rhythm of daily shoots. With memory cards full and stories captured, the journey comes to a close.
