Photography Tour Through North and Central Vietnam (15 Days)

This Luminous Vietnam photography tour is a 15 day travel experience designed for photographers who want to capture Vietnam’s diverse scenes and stories. You begin in Hanoi with its old quarter and move through iconic destinations such as Ha Long Bay, Hue’s imperial heritage, lantern lit Hoi An, tea hills, rice terraces, and tribal villages in the northern mountains.

Throughout the tour, experienced guides help you find the best light and locations for photography, including early morning and late afternoon sessions. You will explore local culture, traditions, landscapes, and daily life with plenty of opportunities to take meaningful photographs.

This tour is suitable for both experienced photographers and enthusiastic travelers who want to improve their skills while enjoying Vietnam’s beauty and cultural richness.

Map of Vietnam highlighting major cities including Hanoi, Hue, Hoi An, Nha Trang, Ho Chi Minh City, Mekong Delta, and indicating the location of a train.
  • On arrival at Noi Bai International Airport (Hanoi), our guide and driver will welcome you and transfer you to the hotel for check-in and a short rest. An orientation meeting will be held in the afternoon before we head out for a street photography session in the Hanoi Old Quarter.

At sunset, we position ourselves for high-angle street scenes, using tripods to capture twilight atmosphere and dynamic motion blur. After the shoot, enjoy a sumptuous Vietnamese Welcome Dinner and spend the evening getting to know your fellow companions.

  • This morning, we visit the Temple of Literature, Vietnam’s first university, to meet our professional models dressed in the elegant traditional Ao Dai. We begin our shoot amid manicured gardens and ancient architecture.

Afterward, we journey to Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the natural wonders of the world. Sail through spectacular scenery featuring nearly 1,600 limestone islands rising from emerald waters, along with natural caves and dramatic karst formations. Drinks on deck and onboard activities provide additional opportunities to enhance our photography experience.

  • Rise early for sunrise photography in Ha Long Bay, capturing fishermen casting nets from small boats against a backdrop of limestone cliffs and calm waters.

Lunch is served onboard as we continue cruising through the breathtaking seascape. We then return to Hanoi for a short flight to the Imperial City of Hue. After hotel check-in, the remainder of the day is at leisure.

  • We begin at dawn, photographing fishermen casting their colorful nets and documenting traditional fishing activities.

After breakfast, visit a traditional village to capture the vibrant process of incense-stick making. Continue to explore the historical grandeur of Emperor Tu Duc’s Tomb, one of Hue’s most poetic royal monuments.

You may choose to continue shooting with the group or explore independently. Later, we visit Thien Mu Pagoda and its monastery before heading to Tam Giang Lagoon and nearby villages for sunset photography.

  • Early morning photography takes place within the majestic grounds of the Imperial City of Hue, featuring professional Ao Dai models—an ideal setting for travel or fashion editorial work. The rest of the morning is free for personal exploration.

After lunch, we drive from Hue to Hoi An via the iconic Hai Van Pass, one of the world’s most scenic coastal roads. From the summit, jungle-covered mountains descend dramatically into the sea, revealing secluded bays and cascading waterfalls.

Upon arrival in Hoi An Ancient Town, we explore the city center and photograph the iconic Japanese Covered Bridge.

  • The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Hoi An was once one of Southeast Asia’s busiest trading ports, flourishing under the Champa Dynasty between the 15th and 19th centuries.

  • Begin the day with a sunrise shoot in Hoi An before transferring to Da Nang for a short flight to the coastal city of Nha Trang. After lunch, enjoy a scenic drive north to Doc Let Beach, an untouched stretch of coastline known for its silky white sand and crystal-clear waters.

The afternoon is free for independent exploration and photography along the beach. Return to the resort for dinner and an early night in preparation for an inspiring day ahead.

  • Morning light transforms the salt fields of Khanh Hoa into a shimmering mosaic, where sunlight reflects off delicate salt crystals like scattered jewels—one of Vietnam’s most visually striking agricultural landscapes.

In the afternoon, journey onward to Phan Rang, home to vast sand dunes and the fading legacy of the Cham people, where land and culture merge into a dramatic photographic setting.

  • The day begins with an intimate look at village life, capturing the artistry of traditional fishing-net weaving. Continue with a cultural immersion in a Cham village, visiting a local family known for their warmth and hospitality, and meeting their daughter with her rare and striking blue eyes.

In the afternoon, take a flight back to Hanoi. If time allows, enjoy a casual street photography session in the Old Quarter, capturing the city’s evening rhythm.

  • After breakfast, visit a vibrant incense-making village on the outskirts of Hanoi, where vivid colors and repetitive patterns create compelling visual narratives.

Return to the city for lunch before heading to the rolling tea plantations of Long Coc. Photograph the surreal landscape of layered green hills, with opportunities to include local tea workers in your compositions.

The day concludes at a charming Muong village homestay, where a home-cooked dinner awaits amid a tranquil rural setting.

  • Rise early to capture sunrise over the Long Coc tea hills, often wrapped in soft morning mist during the right season—an idyllic scene for landscape photography.

Afterward, journey to Mu Cang Chai, widely regarded as Vietnam’s most spectacular rice-terrace region. Cultivated by ethnic communities including the H’Mong, Red Dao (Giao), Nung, and Tay, these terraces form dramatic valleys shaped by generations of human craftsmanship.

Spend the afternoon photographing the region’s most iconic viewpoints before returning to your eco-hotel for dinner, overlooking the terraced valleys below.

  • This morning, we continue exploring Mu Cang Chai with a second rice-terrace location, allowing you to photograph the landscape from fresh perspectives. Depending on conditions, the shoot may include Black H’Mong and/or Red Dao farmers working in the fields, adding a strong human element to the sweeping scenery.

We then journey toward Sapa along a spectacular mountain road, with multiple stops en route for striking landscape photography and visits to remote villages nestled among the hills.

  • Today is dedicated to a Photographer’s Choice shoot. The selected location is likely a little-visited tribal village far from the tourist trail, where rice terraces and traditional life remain beautifully intact.

After returning to Sapa for lunch, we travel onward to Bac Ha, positioning ourselves for an early start at one of Northern Vietnam’s most vibrant ethnic markets the following morning.

  • Begin the day at Bac Ha Market, Vietnam’s most colorful tribal market. Here, ethnic communities gather in traditional attire to trade herbs, produce, textiles, and livestock—an exceptional setting for candid portrait and documentary photography.

After lunch, we begin our return journey to Hanoi. The remainder of the afternoon is free until we reconvene for a farewell dinner at a well-chosen local restaurant, celebrating the journey and the images captured along the way.

  • Enjoy a final leisurely breakfast before spending your remaining time exploring Hanoi, picking up last-minute souvenirs, or simply reflecting on the journey. You will then be transferred to the airport for your onward flight, marking the end of an unforgettable photographic adventure.
